2004 was a successful season for the club. Having been relegated from Division 4 of the North Essex Cricket League (now sponsored by PDQ Cars) at the end of the 2003 season, the 1st XI bounced straight back up by securing runners-up spot behind the runaway division winners, Wivenhoe Town.
It was a nail biting finish, with the second promotion spot undecided until the last minute (literally) of GB&T's final game against Boxted, which was abandoned in near darkness at 7:08pm with the scores level. Boxted then required one run and GB&T one wicket, to win, but to continue playing would have been to endanger the players. The abandonment, meaning that the match was 'void' for league purposes, ensured that Danbury, GB&T's nearest contenders throughout the season, could not leapfrog into second place.
The team's success was reflected in the league averages: Rob Hill, Steve Turner and Phil Williams took the top three places in the Division 4 bowling averages, with Will Hale in 10th spot. Sean Hummerstone, with an average of 57 was 2nd in the batting averages and Michael Lamb was 5th. Nine players (and two partners) attended the league dinner and presentation evening on 5th February 2005, when Rob was presented with his bowling award by former England and Essex cricketer John Childs and Phil Williams collected the team runners-up award.
For the 2nd XI too, under the captaincy of Ron Snelling, it was a modestly successful season, with 7 matches won against 10 lost (2003: 7 won and 13 lost) and the team finishing 7th in Division 5 (2003: 9th) |
